THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Tom Mariner is, on the surface, an average dedicated policeman, but his experiences as a younger man have given him an insight into life on the dark side, and a clear sense of right and wrong。 Mariner has little interest in material things。 He lives in a modest canal-side cottage, enjoys the occasional (real) beer and game of dominoes and drives an old car。 He is most at home in the outdoors, with an OS map and a compass, and in times of crisis, will take off and walk for miles in any weather。

This is the ninth book in the DI Mariner series by author Chris Collett。 I have read this series from the very start and really enjoyed it but for some reason I didn’t find this one quite as gripping。 Still a good read though。The remains of an eighteen year old girl is found by developers on an abandoned campsite in Norfolk。 The girl is identified as Robina Scanlon who back in the 1970’s had a relationship with Detective Tom Mariner when they met on holiday。 Tom always assumed she had left him b This is the ninth book in the DI Mariner series by author Chris Collett。 I have read this series from the very start and really enjoyed it but for some reason I didn’t find this one quite as gripping。 Still a good read though。The remains of an eighteen year old girl is found by developers on an abandoned campsite in Norfolk。 The girl is identified as Robina Scanlon who back in the 1970’s had a relationship with Detective Tom Mariner when they met on holiday。 Tom always assumed she had left him but all the time she was still on the campsite, murdered。 Tom Mariner decides to head for Norfolk to face his past and try to uncover the truth。I really like the lead character Tom Mariner but this book just didn’t hold me like the others。 I fully intend to continue reading this series though。I would like to thank both Netgalley and Joffe books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I chose this book because it was set in Norfolk where I live。 So I was a little bit confused when it jumped to Birmingham。 At first I found the memory sections in italics a bit annoying, but as the book went on, they were more and more important to the story and felt more realistic。 I only realised towards the end that this is part of a 7/8 book series, which shows how well it works as a standalone book。 A fresh approach to the often jaded genre of the crime novel。

Number nine in the DI Tom Mariner series, I have read the complete series but you could read this as a stand-alone。 After getting involved in an incident in Birmingham, where he lives and works, Tom is under scrutiny and has to take time off。 Out of the blue a cold case in Norfolk from 1974 is reopened and his name comes up as a witness from the original investigation。 He was just a teenager back then on holiday with his mother but with time on his hands he decides to travel to Norfolk and ends Number nine in the DI Tom Mariner series, I have read the complete series but you could read this as a stand-alone。 After getting involved in an incident in Birmingham, where he lives and works, Tom is under scrutiny and has to take time off。 Out of the blue a cold case in Norfolk from 1974 is reopened and his name comes up as a witness from the original investigation。 He was just a teenager back then on holiday with his mother but with time on his hands he decides to travel to Norfolk and ends up helping to solve the case。I really enjoyed reading this novel and learning more about Tom’s back story。 Another intriguing British police procedural and I would definitely recommend this series to lovers of crime fiction。 。。。more

I absolutely love this series, Mariner has to be one of my favourite policemen。 He is kind, knowledgeable and compassionate and there’s not many men who would be a ward to a severely autistic young man after his fiancé died。 Hats off to him! Chris writes the series with feeling and you feel for her characters and their lives。 This time Mariner is contacted after a girl’s body, with whom he had a holiday romance in 1976 is found by developers on a building site。 No-one appears to know what happen I absolutely love this series, Mariner has to be one of my favourite policemen。 He is kind, knowledgeable and compassionate and there’s not many men who would be a ward to a severely autistic young man after his fiancé died。 Hats off to him! Chris writes the series with feeling and you feel for her characters and their lives。 This time Mariner is contacted after a girl’s body, with whom he had a holiday romance in 1976 is found by developers on a building site。 No-one appears to know what happened to her, they all thought she disappeared。 As Tom goes back in the depths of his memory, we are offered an insight into his younger life, and it did amuse me。 As he helps the police now with their enquiries it seems no one really knew why she disappeared。 Coupled with that he tries to stop a miscreant after a heinous crime on the top of a bus, only to find that he’s getting the blame for the horrible thug falling of the roof and hitting his head! Hence the involvement of the IPCC。 Whilst he’s away helping the police in Norfolk, Jesson is left in charge, because an old man has had an accident through a heart attack and something is found in his car, which mo one can explain。 What follows is a mix of intrigue and quite a complex case。 I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and think it was one of Chris’s best yet。 As I said before, I adore Mariner, there’s nothing not to like about him。 The ending, was quite a shock, but I won’t say anymore in case I spoil it for other readers。 My thanks to Joffe publishers and Chris for the ARC。 。。。more

I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of Midnight Lies, the ninth novel to feature DCI Tom Mariner of the West Midlands Police。A man dies in a car crash and further inspection finds a dead body in the boot。 Tom and the team aren’t sure what to make of it but he doesn’t have time to look into it as he has to go to Norfolk to assist with a cold case。 Robina Scanlon disappeared 40 years ago and her remains have recently been found。 She was 16 year old Tom’s holiday rom I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of Midnight Lies, the ninth novel to feature DCI Tom Mariner of the West Midlands Police。A man dies in a car crash and further inspection finds a dead body in the boot。 Tom and the team aren’t sure what to make of it but he doesn’t have time to look into it as he has to go to Norfolk to assist with a cold case。 Robina Scanlon disappeared 40 years ago and her remains have recently been found。 She was 16 year old Tom’s holiday romance and she was murdered。I thoroughly enjoyed Midnight Lies, which is another action packed instalment in a very readable series。 It is told from various points of view on the investigation side, so the reader gets a broad view on events and is able to guess alongside the professionals。 No, I didn’t get any of it right, but it was fun trying。The novel is nonstop on developments with not just these two cases but a couple of other subplots as well and a cliffhanger to finish it off。 To make things more interesting the Robina investigation is intercut with Tom’s memories of the time and his first girlfriend (teenage fumblings are not my fondest memories but he seems nostalgic)。 Nostalgia aside, there are few dull moments and plenty to keep the reader occupied and even the constant switching between plot lines isn’t distracting as there’s so many curiosity inducing developments。 It’s an easy way to while away a few hours。Tom Mariner may be wallowing in the past, but it isn’t deflecting his thinking and he manages to solve everything on his plate。 I don’t feel that the reader gets a good sense of who he is in this novel, but with so many cases on the go it’s not really important。Midnight Lies is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending。 。。。more

This story is a more poignant investigation for Tom Mariner as a body is found of a young woman and the murder dates back to the summer of 1976, a time when the teenage Mariner knew her whilst on holiday at a campsite。 It is told in dual timelines as Tom has his own current investigations going however decides to help out the force in Norfolk recalling memories from his youth。 I am old enough to remember that very hot summer and love the way in which Chris describes the innocence (to a point) in This story is a more poignant investigation for Tom Mariner as a body is found of a young woman and the murder dates back to the summer of 1976, a time when the teenage Mariner knew her whilst on holiday at a campsite。 It is told in dual timelines as Tom has his own current investigations going however decides to help out the force in Norfolk recalling memories from his youth。 I am old enough to remember that very hot summer and love the way in which Chris describes the innocence (to a point) in which those of that generation grew up in。 It was very evocative at times although she creates an awareness that evil was still around。 A good addition to a good series。Thanks to Joffe books for the ARC to review。 。。。more

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC。The 2 cases in this Detective Tom Mariner book are proving very difficult to solve。 The 1st one is the deadly car accident with 2 men killed, the 2nd a cold case from Tom's youth when, 40 years later, the bones of his 1st girlfriend have been found。 To add to his woes, he's under investigation for the severe wounding of a youth he chased。This is a good addition to the series with a shocking conclusion and I'm looking forward to the next outing, ea Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC。The 2 cases in this Detective Tom Mariner book are proving very difficult to solve。 The 1st one is the deadly car accident with 2 men killed, the 2nd a cold case from Tom's youth when, 40 years later, the bones of his 1st girlfriend have been found。 To add to his woes, he's under investigation for the severe wounding of a youth he chased。This is a good addition to the series with a shocking conclusion and I'm looking forward to the next outing, eager to know how things proceed。 。。。more

Another installment in the life and duties of DI Thomas Mariner。 This one takes us through a current case and one that happened when Tom was still at school and on holiday with his mum。 Part told in flashbacks both stories are interesting and absorbing。Loved it。Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher I read a free advance review copy of the book。 This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion。

DCI Tom Mariner is at the helm and there are lots of things to navigate。 He chased a man who had stabbed someone and now he is being accused of pulling the man off a roof。 There has been a fatal RTA, only when the car was further inspected another body was found- one already dead。 Tom then gets a visit from Norfolk police who have found a body。 He worked on a case of a missing woman many years ago and it was someone he knew from his childhood- the body is now known to be the missing woman。I real DCI Tom Mariner is at the helm and there are lots of things to navigate。 He chased a man who had stabbed someone and now he is being accused of pulling the man off a roof。 There has been a fatal RTA, only when the car was further inspected another body was found- one already dead。 Tom then gets a visit from Norfolk police who have found a body。 He worked on a case of a missing woman many years ago and it was someone he knew from his childhood- the body is now known to be the missing woman。I really enjoy this series- they happily stand alone- Tom and his team are real characters who have a depth to them that makes them come alive on the pages。 There's a lot going on but it is very easy to follow。 Three unrelated cases, three different enquiries and then a personal one for one of the team thrown in for good measure, which again brings depth and reality to the characters。A fast paced read with twists and turns with changes of pave on each case。A highly entertaining read which I enjoyed very much。 For more reviews please follow me on Twitter@nickisbookblog 。。。more

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley。3。5* rounded down。 There was a lot going on in this novel: Tom is facing an enquiry over an injury to a suspect he was chasing; he is asked to assist in a cold case after the body of his first girlfriend is discovered; he has two suspicious deaths he is meant to be investigating; and then later a schoolgirl goes missing。I found the thread relating to the cold case very dull, and started skimming the italicized sections set in the p I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley。3。5* rounded down。 There was a lot going on in this novel: Tom is facing an enquiry over an injury to a suspect he was chasing; he is asked to assist in a cold case after the body of his first girlfriend is discovered; he has two suspicious deaths he is meant to be investigating; and then later a schoolgirl goes missing。I found the thread relating to the cold case very dull, and started skimming the italicized sections set in the past early on - far more information than I needed about Tom's first sexual encounter。 The solution to the main case was a bit 'out there', but there was a lot of good misdirection along the way。 I felt the missing schoolgirl strand could have been better developed - it was mostly off-page and seemed tacked on。 And as for the enquiry, I kept forgetting all about it。Not the best in this series。 。。。more
